Disaster Situation due to floods in Sri Lanka

Heavy pre monsoon rains in Sri Lanka have killed at 23 persons and affected 45,680 families (174,310 persons) in 20 districts according to the National Disaster Management Centre.
Floods and threat of landslides have forced the evacuation of people in several low lying areas while four main rivers have reached flood levels. Four districts are on ‘red alert’ for possible landslides. Spill gates of many reservoirs have been opened across the country.
Due to the disaster situation 121 houses have been completely destroyed while 5,205 have been partially damaged.
As at 12h00 on 28 May 2018 17,796 families and 70,376 persons are temporarily housed in 265 safe centres. National Disaster Management Centre has disbursed SLRs million 44.15 to the District Secretaries for relief work in 12 affected districts.
The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources and Disaster Management together with the Security Forces personnel are engaged in relief work.
